What is Mitragyna Speciosa?

Mitragyna Speciosa, commonly known as kratom, is a tree in the coffee family. The plant’s leaves have been used as traditional herbs by local communities of Southeast Asia for centuries. Given it is a coffee plant, the alkaloid content in mitragyna speciosa can lead to a variety of effects that it is well known for. Recently, mitragyna speciosa or all natural kratom, has been gaining popularity for positive and negative reasons. It's potential benefits are still being discovered through studies, but historical data and previous studies are showing positive results in terms of use cases and safety. In terms of negative attention, products labeled as kratom containing high levels of the alkaloid 7-Hydroxy-mitragynine have been gaining popularity and their safety profile is considered unknown to dangerous at this time. The popular advocacy group, American Kratom Association, has called for proper labeling of these products to not display kratom or mitragyna speciosa on the product due to these products being synthetically made. Primary Alkaloids in Mitragyna Speciosa:

Mitragynine is the most abundant of kratom alkaloids in the Mitragyna speciosa plant. The structure of mitragynine is unique, allowing it to interact with multiple receptors in the body, lending kratom its multifaceted properties. Different kratom batches we receive will always have variable mitragynine levels which is due to it being an all-natural product and plant.

7-hydroxy-mitragynine is the more controversial kratom alkaloid. Derived from mitragynine through the oxidation process, 7-hydroxy-mitragynine may react with the body's receptors more, leading to its enhanced potency. Our kratom on average contains only .005-.14% 7-hydroxy-mitragynine of the total alkaloid content which is well below the legal limit of 1-2%.

What is the Legal Status of Mitragyna Speciosa (Kratom)?

Currently, it is not a federally controlled or scheduled substance, although there are local and state restrictions that may impact buyers ability to purchase or use mitragyna speciosa products. Legislation and legality status is constantly changing based on cities, counties and states in the USA. With this being said, we have made a legality map to display the current legality status at time of posting to help understand if mitragyna speciosa is legal in your area. For instance, kratom is legal in most states except the following: 

• The states of Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington DC, and Wisconsin
• The cities of San Diego or Oceanside in California, the city of Jerseyville in Illinois, the city of Ontario in Oregon, Sarasota County in Florida, or Union County in Mississippi (please note these may not be current)
